"She has gone, but her eyes still haunt me. They demand an answer."
Alexandra Kollontai's A Great Love was released in 1929, a fictional collection centered around working class women's struggle for revolutionary liberation.
This shirt features a quote from the final line in the short story Sisters, following the protagonist's realization her husband had bought sex from an economically vulnerable woman. After befriending the woman, the protagonist leaves her husband.
"He who should have helped an unemployed comrade in her hour of need buys her body. ... It was so utterly revolting that my mind was made up as she spoke. I could not live with a creature of that sort a moment longer."
She then goes on with the will to fight the structures of oppression that had caused the woman to enter the trade in the first place.
Kollontai herself was a fierce advocate for the rights of women as the first female member of a governing cabinet in history as the People's Commissar for Welfare in the early Soviet Union. She is credited with forcing through the first paid child care programs, and was such an effective advocate for organizing women that she was banned from the United States as a "national security risk."
